SYNOPSIS: 504 pages. Vol. 1 of a 2-volume set. 5.25" X 7.5" and heavy for its size. Frontispiece illustration by PHIZ. "First published in 1841, this farcical picaresque novel of Irish military life is among Lever's best known works. Lever (1806-72), an Anglo-Irish novelist, was once compared favorably to Charles Dickens and extremely popular in the 1840s and '50s. His reputation suffered increasing criticism in the late 19th century and he is not well known today, and is sometimes in fact referred to as "The Lost Victorian."

Format: Hardback. No dust jacket. NOT an EX LIB.

Condition: VG condition. Personal inscription on inside dated 1907. Navy cloth boards with gold foil lettering and upper gilt page edges. The title page & following (publisher's) page disbound and connected to each other as a 4-page section and laid-in (pictured). Some slight soiling and edge rubbing to covers, spots on right page edges, pages age yellowed. No further markings. Very solid little volume, remainder is tightly bound.
