SYNOPSIS:  747 pages. SHORT STORIES. Introduction by F. Van Wyck Mason. The stories are chronologically arranged. Mr. Mason has used the following yardstick when selecting the material for this book: He knows that readers want action and color and life lived at a high pitch and they demand that the stories by faithful in all important respects to the historical scenes they bring to life. Ameican are peace-loving people, yet no American has lived to the age of thirty-five without seeing his country at war. Here is the human story, no less genuine because it is fiction, of generations of men who have left ploughshare or turbine to pick up musket or machine gun. They are the writers who tell how a man acts and feels under fire, what happens to a civilian when he puts on a uniform, what war means in all human relations. Each selection fills a definite place in the time-pattern of the book, forming a kaleidoscope of variety. " Seven sections, each headed by a full-page b/w drawing: The French and Indian War (1754-1763) ; The Revolution (1775-1783) ; The War of 1812 (1812-1814) ; The Mexican War (1846-1848) ; Indian Wars; the Civil War (1861-1865) ; War with Spain (1898) ; World War I (1917-1918) . Published in the middle of World War II, this book helped to lift the spirits of the American people.
